The Wheel of Life

Many things factor into your level of happiness, health, and well being. As a health coach I like to talk in terms of “wellness” and not just “health”. Wellness encompasses much more than just your physical health. There are many different models of wellness, but most of them incorporate some form of these six dimensions: Physical, Spiritual, Intellectual, Social, Emotional, and Occupational. Having just one area lacking can throw your whole well being out of balance. So as much as we like to make sure we are healthy by eating right and exercising, we also need to pay attention to the social, occupational and other areas for total health. A good way to visualize this is to draw a wheel and rate each area of your life. How well does your wheel roll right now?

Here’s what the wheel should look like to begin with.

Next, rate your level of satisfaction in each area of your life with 1 being not satisfied and 10 being very satisfied. Be honest, no one has to see this but you. Once you have ranked each area. Draw a new circle to connect the numbers you picked as your satisfaction level. How smooth is your circle? Would your wheel roll or is it a little (or a lot) bumpy?

Here’s an example of a wheel I completed for myself a while back. Notice how unbalanced and bumpy my wheel is.

The lines definitely do not connect. This wheel wouldn't have a chance of rolling.

This is a good exercise to do every so often to take stock of how balanced all the areas in your life are. It’s a great starting point towards optimal wellness. It is definitely an eye opener to see on paper what areas of your life need a little help. So not only do I encourage you to get out there and exercise, but I also encourage you to have fun, laugh, love, and grow 🙂
